With the election less than three weeks away, a few more articles have appeared in the international press…at least from outlets specifically geared towards Latin America!
Here are some links to keep everyone in the loop with some English coverage.
“Outcome of crucial referendum in the balance,” Latin News, October 2, 2024.
From the article, “for many, the vote tally in one of two referendums being staged on the same day is likely to attract as much if not more attention, certainly abroad. One of these referendums would allow police to execute search warrants in homes at night. Proposed by the Lacalle Pou administration, it would mark a significant change, if approved, given that they are currently outlawed in the constitution even with a court-ordered warrant. But it is the second referendum, which could produce the more seismic change. This was proposed by the umbrella trade union Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT) and, if approved, it would have a major impact on the country’s finances.”
Luisa Leme, “LatAm in Focus: Could a Referendum Rattle Uruguay’s Presidential Elections,” October 3, 2024, PODCAST.
From the podcast preview, ““Uruguay is effectively a two-party system [that] acts as if it isn’t,” said Nicolás Saldías, a senior analyst for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Economist Intelligence Unit. Representing the left in the presidential elections is the Broad Front’s Yamandú Orsi, the former mayor of Uruguay’s second largest department who was endorsed by popular ex-President José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica. Right-wing parties are fielding individual candidates in the first round, but the National Party’s Álvaro Delgado, a former chief of staff to incumbent President Luis Lacalle Pou, is the most likely to make the run-off vote on November 24.”
So far the New York Times is still only covering Uruguay in respect to soccer. My eyes are peeled though for anything about the election!
I will continue to send around more articles as I see them in the coming weeks! Thanks as always.
